Students have many reasons for not being comfortable or experienced in the outdoors, including physical accessibility, geographic accessibility of outdoor spaces especially in metropolitan areas, cost, gatekeeping from the outdoors community, and physical safety — it’s not always safe to be a person of color or a visibly queer person in the wilderness. There are many ways to be a geoscientist, and in fact most work happens in the office, even for field-based scientists. It’s important to change the perception of the geosciences as exclusively hiking by promoting research and careers in the laboratory and using computer science, and to make field work more accessible so that all students are able to take advantage of field trips make connections and see processes in context.
